Frequently asked questions about breastfeeding support
Choosing feeding support can bring up a lot of questions. Here are clear, practical answers about how The Breastfeeding Cafe can help. If you do not see your situation here, you are still welcome to reach out; we will listen and help you figure out a good next step.
Getting started with support
How do I book an appointment?
You can book online or send a message through our contact page, or reach out by phone or email. If you are not sure which service to pick, tell us a little about your baby’s age and your main question; we will guide you.
How do I check my insurance coverage?
You can start by checking your lactation coverage through The Lactation Network or Wildflower Health using the coverage links on our site. If you have Cigna or Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, check Wildflower Health first. For other commercial insurance plans, start with TLN: check Wildflower Health coverage or check TLN coverage. If you have questions, you are always welcome to reach out.
Do you accept self-pay?
Yes. If you prefer self-pay or you are not using insurance, visit our Pricing & Getting Started page to compare options and learn how to schedule.
When should I see a lactation consultant?
Many families reach out when something feels hard: pain with feeding, questions about latch, worries about weight gain or diapers, or simply wanting a calm check-in early on. You can also book before birth if you want to prepare with less rush. There is no single “right” time; if feeding is on your mind, it is reasonable to ask for support.
Can I get breastfeeding support before baby arrives?
Yes. Prenatal visits focus on education, confidence, and realistic expectations, not pressure for a perfect start. We can talk through common early challenges, how to know feeding is going okay, and how partners or support people can help in practical ways.
What happens during a lactation consultation?
We start with your story: your goals, your baby’s age, and what you have noticed so far. When possible, we observe a feed and look at positioning and latch together. You will get suggestions you can try during the visit, plus a clear plan for what to watch for next. We explain things in everyday language and pace the visit so you do not feel rushed. Learn more on our lactation consultations page.
Do you offer in-person appointments?
Yes. Lactation consultations take place in your home for your comfort and convenience. Telehealth appointments are also available for follow-ups and virtual support throughout Florida.
Insurance, private-pay, and superbills
Do you accept insurance?
We help eligible families access insurance-covered lactation care through The Lactation Network and Wildflower Health. Coverage depends on your specific plan, state, and eligibility. If you have Cigna or Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, start with Wildflower Health. For other commercial insurance plans, start with The Lactation Network: check coverage with Wildflower Health or check coverage with The Lactation Network. Learn more on our Pricing & Getting Started page.
What is the difference between The Lactation Network and Wildflower Health?
Both help eligible families access lactation care through insurance. Wildflower Health currently supports eligible members through select plans such as Cigna and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. The Lactation Network works with several other commercial insurance plans. If you are unsure which one applies to you, you can check both options.
What if my insurance is not covered?
If insurance coverage is not available, you may still book a self-pay lactation visit. Superbills may be available upon request so families can submit to their insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
What is a superbill?
A superbill is a document we can provide after a self-pay visit so you have something to submit if you decide to ask your insurance company about possible out-of-network reimbursement.
Can I submit a superbill to insurance for possible reimbursement?
Yes. Self-pay clients may request a superbill after their visit. You submit the superbill to your insurance company directly through your member portal, app, fax, or claim form, and follow up with your insurance about reimbursement. The Breastfeeding Cafe does not follow up with insurance on your behalf.
Is reimbursement guaranteed?
No. Superbills are provided as a courtesy for self-pay clients. Reimbursement is not guaranteed and depends on your insurance plan, benefits, diagnosis code, provider eligibility, deductible, out-of-network coverage, and payer policies.
How long does it take to receive a superbill?
Superbills are typically completed within 24 to 72 hours after your clinical documentation is finalized when requested. You can ask for one at the time of your visit or afterward by reaching out.
What should I ask my insurance company before booking?
Helpful questions include whether your plan reimburses for out-of-network lactation consultation with an IBCLC, whether lactation visits are covered under preventive breastfeeding support, whether you need a referral or prescription, what CPT codes are covered, whether you can submit a superbill yourself, where to send the claim, and whether there is a deadline for submitting it. Our Pricing page includes a helpful script you can use when calling your insurance.
Latch, feeding, and comfort
Can a lactation consultant help with latch concerns?
Yes. Latch and positioning are a common reason families schedule a visit. We look at what is happening for you and your baby, try adjustments that fit your body and your baby’s feeding style, and help you recognize signs that feeding is going well, or when to check in with your pediatric care team.
I have nipple pain. Can you help?
Yes. Pain is a common reason families seek breastfeeding support. We look at latch and positioning, feeding rhythm, and any patterns that may be contributing, then help you try changes you can feel during the visit. If medical evaluation is needed, we will encourage you to loop in your pediatric or OB team.
Do you help with tongue-tie questions?
Tongue-tie concerns come up often. We do not diagnose, but we can talk through feeding function, observe a feed when possible, and help you plan questions to discuss with your pediatric or dental provider.
Milk supply and pumping
Can you help with milk supply questions?
We can help you understand feeding patterns, milk removal, pumping basics, and how to interpret what you are seeing at home. We do not diagnose medical conditions or guarantee specific outcomes; every situation is different, but we can offer evidence-informed guidance and help you know what questions to bring to your health care providers when needed.
Can you help with pumping questions?
Yes. We can help with pump setup, comfort, flange questions, return-to-work planning, and troubleshooting output worries. Telehealth is a great option for pumping support when an in-person visit is not practical.
Prenatal visits and planning ahead
Do you offer prenatal breastfeeding support?
Yes. Prenatal support is about preparation and confidence: what to expect in the early days, how to tell if feeding is on track, and how to build a flexible mindset if plans change. It is supportive education, not a test you have to pass.
Telehealth and appointments
Do you offer telehealth appointments?
Yes. Telehealth can be a good fit for follow-ups, pumping and flange questions, planning between visits, or times when staying home is easier. If hands-on support in your home would serve you better, we will say so clearly and help you think through options.
What do I need for a telehealth appointment?
A phone, tablet, or computer with a stable internet connection is usually enough. If you want to review a feed or pumping setup, good lighting helps. We will tell you what to have nearby based on your goals.
Classes and what we offer
Do you offer baby care classes?
Yes. Our baby care classes are designed to help you feel more prepared for newborn cues, feeding, and day-to-day care, always in a warm, parent-friendly tone. See what we offer on our About page, or contact us if you are unsure which option fits you best.
