Insurance-Covered Lactation Visits

We are happy to help families explore insurance-covered lactation care when eligible. The Breastfeeding Cafe currently works with The Lactation Network and Wildflower Health to help families check coverage and request lactation support.

The Lactation Network may support coverage for many commercial insurance plans, including plans such as UnitedHealthcare, UMR, Oxford, Aetna, Meritain, Curative, Sutter Health, First Health, First Choice Health, Imagine Health, MultiPlan, PNOA, Velocity PPO, VA CCN/Optum East, and some limited Blue Cross Blue Shield plans. Coverage varies by plan, state, visit type, and eligibility.

Wildflower Health currently supports eligible members through select health plans, including Cigna and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. Families can use our Wildflower Health link to check eligibility and request lactation care.

If you have Cigna or Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, start with Wildflower Health. If you have another commercial insurance plan, start with The Lactation Network.

Insurance benefits are always verified before confirming insurance-covered care. If coverage is not available, self-pay visits and superbills may still be available upon request. Whether you are looking for a lactation consultant in Orlando, Cigna or Anthem lactation consultant options, Wildflower Health lactation support, breastfeeding support in Orlando, or postpartum breastfeeding help in Central Florida, we will help you choose the next step that fits your family.

How the superbill process works

  1. Book and pay for your lactation visit.
  2. Your clinical documentation is completed after the visit.
  3. A superbill is generated within 24 to 72 hours when requested.
  4. You submit the superbill to your insurance company through your member portal, app, fax, or claim form.
  5. You follow up directly with your insurance company about reimbursement.

Helpful script for calling your insurance

Hi, I received lactation consultation services from an IBCLC and paid out of pocket. I have documentation from my visit. Can you tell me how to submit this for out-of-network reimbursement, and whether lactation support is covered under my plan?

What to ask your insurance before booking

These questions can help you understand your benefits before your visit, so there are fewer surprises later.

  • Does my plan reimburse for out-of-network lactation consultation with an IBCLC?
  • Are lactation visits covered under preventive breastfeeding support?
  • Do I need a referral or prescription?
  • What CPT codes are covered?
  • Can I submit a superbill myself?
  • Where do I send the claim?
  • Is there a deadline for submitting the claim?

Superbills are provided as a courtesy for self-pay clients to submit to their insurance plan. Reimbursement is not guaranteed and depends on the client's individual insurance benefits, diagnosis code, provider eligibility, deductible, out-of-network coverage, and payer policies.
