What a lactation consultation is
A lactation consultation is dedicated time for you, your baby, and an experienced IBCLC to look at feeding as a whole, not just “latch or no latch.” It is a chance to ask questions, try adjustments, and leave with a plan that feels doable. Whether this is your first baby or your third, support is tailored to your goals and your baby’s needs.
Concerns we often address together
Many families schedule a visit for support with:
- Latch and positioning: Comfort for you, effective milk transfer for baby, and small changes that can reduce pain or frustration.
- Milk supply questions: Understanding feeding patterns, pumping, supplementation decisions (always discussed without judgment), and when to check in with your pediatric or OB team.
- Pumping and bottle feeding: Flange fit, schedules that match real life, and paced feeding ideas when bottles are part of your plan.
- Newborn feeding concerns: Slow weight gain, fussy feeding, sleep and feeding overlap, or “something just feels off.”
We help you interpret what you are seeing and support next steps; we do not replace your medical providers for diagnosis or treatment.
If bottles are part of your plan, start with our paced bottle feeding guide and Liz's bottle recommendations, then bring questions to your visit so we can tailor the plan to your baby.
What to expect during your visit
Lactation consultations take place in your home (we are not currently scheduling appointments at the business address). Visits typically include a caring conversation about your history and goals, observation of a feed when possible, and gentle suggestions you can practice during the visit. You will receive clear, written or verbal takeaways so you are not trying to remember everything while tired. If you feel overwhelmed, that is normal; we move at a pace that respects where you are emotionally and physically.
